Every wondered how much water a husky will consume over the period of a long distance race like the Iditarod ?
Huskies need a lot of water, and they would consume around 1.5 gallons over the course of a race. That’s the equivalent of you or I drinking 72 glasses of water per day.
However, getting a husky to drink this much water, whilst travelling long distances and having to transport it with you, all without it freezing at below freezing temperatures, is a no win situation.
There is though a way for the dogs to get their daily allowance of fluids whilst at the same time getting their fill of necessary calories to take them on their journey.
Mushers feed their dogs a warm gruel, a mixture of meat or fish with water and kibble.
This provides not only all the nutrients the dogs needs to produce energy it also provides them with the amount of water they need to drink.
The dogs dont drink water in winter, they eat it.
