Eureka musher, Brent Sass, lead the pack of 49 mushers for most of the way, and finished the 50th Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 8 days 14 hours 38 minutes and 43 seconds.
Although Brent has won the Yukon Quest multiple times, the Iditarod Championship has so far eluded him.
Five time Iditarod Champion, Dallas Seavey, came in behind Sass an hour later. Dallas was hoping to make this year his sixth win and to become the only musher in the races history to win six times.
Third place and beyond are way back in White Mountain on their mandatory 8 hour breaks as both Brent and Dallas finished under the burled arch in Nome.
This years race, was a great one for spectators and had people on the edge of their seats right until the end, wondering if Dallas could catch Brent. But Brent had managed to get a significant lead that even the bad weather coming to the checkpoint at Safety wouldn’t allow Dallas to catch him.
Huge congratulations to Brent and all at the Wild and Free Kennel. He is a very deserving winner.
